Last day of work
or
how I almost got slapped by a 40-year old black woman
first part of the day, it was pretty boring. we had nothing scheduled for the entire day. The camp director, for some reason, was making my kids clean stuff and put things away. It was weird, because that's not why they're there. I was doing most of the work, because I didn't want the kids to work at camp.
One of the lifeguards, Emma, hasn't worked at the camp this week because her other job wanted her to work during the day, and it pays more. Since she needs to pay for college, she's been working there this week. Emma came in today to get her check.
Since the lifeguards were working to clean out the lodge, Emma couldn't go see them. She went back to her car, and went to leave.
It had been raining earlier that day, and there was sand on the road. When the sand parking lot ended, that is. She had to make a 180 degree turn to get out. When she went to, her car slipped on the road and slid into a tree.
I was the first one over there, because I was closest. She got out, and was pretty ok. Well, she wasn't hurt physically, at least.
I got her over to the office, and they called 911, just in case.
I was staying with her, just like kind of holding her/rubbing her back, because she seemed to need some sort of contact.
A paramedic came, and after making sure nothing needed to be done for Emma right then, waited around.
One of the mothers, Cindy, has apparently known Emma for years, so she came over and was being comforting and such.
Another of the mothers of one of the boys I was working with, Tatiana the name of the mother, not the boy, came over and told Cindy that "nothing happened," and she should go back to her group. Cindy said that Emma needed to be comforted at that point. Tatiana said that Cindy needed to go to her group. They had some more minor words, and then Cindy left. She said she was taking her kids and leaving.
Tatiana left to do something else.
At that point, I decided Emma needed to get up and walk around and mainly get away from Tatiana.
We walked a little bit, and then the paramedic came over and asked us where we were going. I said that we were just going to be around here; she needed to walk around.
He got mad, and said that there was no reason to get snippy.
I suppose I might have been a little short, but it was a stressful situation that I'm not around every day. He is. One would think that he'd understand that it is stressful, and not jump down everyone's throat.
I took a slow breath, explained that I was sorry, and said that we were going to be within 50 feet of where he was standing, she just needed to move a little.
He said some more shit, and then went back to his car.
Now, in all of this, he never really checked her out. He asked if she was ok, and she said she was. He was satisfied with this. Is that right? I'm not really sure.
Anyway, after we walked around, we came back and sat down. Emma wanted to go back over to the car and look at it, so I took her over.
I picked up a "honda" nameplate that came off the car and gave it to her. she seemed to like it.
Then, the lifeguards came over. Since they had worked with Emma for 6 weeks, they were understandably upset. They were making sure she was ok, and hugging her and such.
Tatiana came over with some plastic bags and a sheet of paper, gave them to the waterfront director, and told them that they should be down at the waterfront. She said that everyone's making a huge deal of nothing at all.
I went up to her and told her she needed to butt out. Because she did. She got really loud and told me that she was on the clock, and everybody should be working. I didn't say anything; I just stood there. She said that she was still working, and I needed to get back to the boys. I said "no."
She got really mad, and started yelling. really loudly. "get out of my face." I just stood there.
She tore off her hat and threw it to the ground behind her. She kind of threw her arms up behind her.
I had so much adrenaline running through my system, my leg was shaking. like, up and down. it was crazy.
Then, the program director came over, and put a hand on Tatiana's shoulder. I turned and walked away.
I basically comforted Emma some more, until her father came and the first words out of his mouth were "how fucking fast were you going in this parking lot?" sigh.
that was quite a last day of work. The rest was rather anticlimactic, except for when I went to go see the lifeguards after all the kids had left, and tatiana was coming back. I just turned around and went back up to the office.
What a friday the 13th. heh.
